You can confirm whether the IRS received and applied your tax payment using one or more of the official methods below. The best method depends on how you paid (Direct Pay, EFTPS, check, or third-party processor).

1) Check your IRS online account

The fastest and most complete way to confirm payment is through your IRS Online Account.

What you can see:

  • Payments received and posted
  • Payment date and amount
  • Tax year applied
  • Outstanding balances (if any)

How to access:

2) Confirmation by payment method

A) IRS Direct Pay (bank account)

If you paid using IRS Direct Pay:

  • You receive an immediate confirmation number
  • Payments usually post within 1–2 business days

You can also look up payments here.

B) EFTPS (Electronic Federal Tax Payment System)

If you paid using EFTPS:

  • Log in to your EFTPS account
  • View payment history and confirmations
  • Payments typically post within 1–2 business days

C) Check or money order

If you paid by mail:

  • Check your bank statement to see if the check cleared
  • IRS processing may take 2–6 weeks (longer during peak season)

A cleared check does not always mean the payment was applied correctly, verify in your IRS account.

D) Credit or debit card

If you paid by card through an IRS-authorized processor:

  • Check your card statement
  • Payments typically post within 1–2 business days
  • Fees charged by the processor are not IRS fees

3) Use IRS transcripts

You can also confirm payment via your Account Transcript, which shows:

  • Payments received
  • Date posted
  • How the payment was applied

Access transcripts here.

4) If your payment doesn’t appear

If the payment does not show after a reasonable time:

Posting timelines

Payment method Typical posting time
Direct Pay / EFTPS 1–2 business days
Credit/Debit card 1–2 business days
Check 2–6 weeks

Next steps

  • Confirm the tax year and tax type used
  • Contact the IRS at 800-829-1040
  • Keep your confirmation number or canceled check

5) Recordkeeping

Always retain:

  • Payment confirmation numbers
  • Bank or card statements
  • Copies of checks or money orders
  • IRS account screenshots (if applicable)

Summary

  • Best method: IRS Online Account
  • Electronic payments post in 1–2 days
  • Mailed checks can take weeks
  • Account transcripts confirm how payments were applied
  • Call the IRS if payment doesn’t appear after normal processing time
